SOYC is committed to achieving the very highest standards in safety and excellence within the sport of yachting. The club is an RYA Recognised Training Centre for practical courses and is fortunate to have a number of RYA qualified instructors amongst our members.

Our Practical Courses

Learn by doing. All practical courses include living aboard and passage-making on the Solent and surrounding waters.

All courses run aboard our own yachts on the Solent. Small groups of 4–5 students ensure maximum time at the helm.

Competent Crew

A course to take the beginner to a safe and competent standard crewing a yacht. For those starting yachting. Often taught alongside Dayskipper students with both levels of students aboard. This is a popular way for a beginner to start. If you have completed Start Yachting then you can go on to do a subsequent 3-day course which will bring you up to the level of Competent Crew. The alternative way is to go straight into a Competent Crew course run over 5-days or alternatively as 3 weekends.

Notes:

The price includes RYA course completion certificate. Course starts at 09:00 on the first day and finishes approximately 16.00 on the last day. Food is not included in the course cost.
